Season prep: Top tips for newcomers to triathlon

GB Age-Group triathlete and former international rower Kirsty Myles shares her five best tips for novices. 

Kirsty turned to triathlon after achieving success representing Great Britain at international championship level.

The CurraNZ ambassador is part of the Artemis race team and represented GB at the European Sprint Championships in 2015 and 2016. The Physiotherapy Manager is focusing on Ironman this season.

 

  1. Have fun - the early dark mornings are tough so make sure you enjoy what you’re doing. Set a goal and enjoy the processes in between to get there. Happy athletes are fast athletes! 
  1. Train consistently - doing ten days’ hard training then needing five days off to recover isn't effective. Listen to your body and find a way to train day-on-day, week-on-week ensuring you get enough recovery to push the boundaries of performance.

    Nutrition and sleep are vital to achieving this, which is where Curranz comes to the fore. That became apparent when I forgot CurraNZ over my two-week Christmas break and I really, really struggled to push those boundaries.

  1. Turn your weaknesses into your strengths - identify where you might be weak and take the time to learn the technique or build strength (for example) the rewards are massive!
  1. Being scared is normal - but don't be afraid to try new things and put yourself out there. Looking at my training program almost every day I get 'the fear' that I won't be able to hit the target wattage, speeds or duration of the session. Having the fear is normal, ask the pros!!
  1. Surround yourself with positive people - they help motivate, push you, celebrate with you, but most importantly pick you up when you're having a bad day.

    My swim group is a random bunch who just all happen to swim in the same pool, in the same lane, at the same time. It's not an organised gathering but it works so well! Also, even though the Artemis Tri team girls and I don't train together all the time, we are always chatting on messenger, listening, advising and laughing!
